Well, the New York edition of the Windup Watch Fair for 2024 is done and dusted, and as per usual, I have opinions. This year’s fair featured more than 130 brands, sprawling across a space five times the size of last year’s, and still, the venue seemed to be bursting at the seams with eager enthusiasts salivating over the watch world’s latest and greatest. This really is the Super Bowl for micro and indie brands, with strong showings too numerous to list, but I’ll do my level best, in alphabetical order, to spotlight ten of my (highly subjective) standouts. Time…

The new Omega Speedmaster FOiS (for First Omega in Space) is the perfect example of a watch that’s not particularly spectacular, groundbreaking or innovative. But more often than not, a great watch doesn’t need to be a game-changer. The 2024 Speedmaster FOiS comes in continuity to a concept introduced in 2012, a vintage-inspired watch celebrating the first space flight of an Omega watch. It retains what should be retained, it upgrades what could be upgraded and somehow brings what the fan base wanted to see in this watch. Following our introducing article, it’s time now for us to bring our…

It was 1979, and I had accompanied my parents to a dinner party. I was six years old, and my parents’ friends had no children. My parents married later in life and came from a generation where children were meant to be seen and not heard. Unfortunately, I am one of those who likes to be seen and heard. However, I was instructed to be on my best behavior, so they set me in front of the television. Noticing that I was bored, our host handed me his wristwatch and said, “Check this out.” He pressed a button on the…

Over the past few years, stone dials have seemingly popped up everywhere. More modern brands are making them. At the same time, vintage examples have become more collectible and jumped in price considerably. But stone dials are still a relatively undiscovered corner of watch collecting. They’re not well understood on the vintage or modern side. So I wanted to cover them on Hodinkee. Typically, we’d do this by talking to a few experts and synthesizing those conversations into an in-depth article. But I decided to try something different this time around, hitting record on three conversations to learn about modern…

Last week, the historic Swiss watch brand Universal Genève took a page from the marketing textbook in the Age of Social Media, removing all of its previous Instagram posts signifying to the world that a rebrand is underway. As soft-launched in the brand’s first post, Universal Genève’s prodigal return is scheduled for 2026, and the brand has reimagined its website as a digital magazine — which the brand has dubbed UG Magazine — and debuted a newly redesigned modern logo in anticipation of its revival. Additionally, there will be a number of “pre-launch events” sprinkled along from now until 2026 to further help…

A new brand is the talk of the watch world today, and the latest example of a trend we’ve seen developing over the last several years. GRØNE is the new project from Bart and Tim Grönefeld, the brothers behind the Grönefeld brand, one of the most acclaimed indies in the world. Following in the footsteps of the M.A.D. 1 project, Kurono Tokyo, and others, the brand exists as a way for admirers of a high priced independent maker to buy…
