If you haven’t gleaned this yet, I watch the pricing of these watches pretty closely. All of them. And I would be open to owning any of them – including the yellow gold examples (which aren’t readily available, though there are three available on C24 right now). I have seen prices fluctuate markedly recently and where we are now, I think, is a period where the delta between the ask and the offer is just really very wide.  It’s no different than many markets for many things at the moment – you have people trying to hold on to an environment…

Well, the New York edition of the Windup Watch Fair for 2024 is done and dusted, and as per usual, I have opinions. This year’s fair featured more than 130 brands, sprawling across a space five times the size of last year’s, and still, the venue seemed to be bursting at the seams with eager enthusiasts salivating over the watch world’s latest and greatest. This really is the Super Bowl for micro and indie brands, with strong showings too numerous to list, but I’ll do my level best, in alphabetical order, to spotlight ten of my (highly subjective) standouts. Time…

The new Omega Speedmaster FOiS (for First Omega in Space) is the perfect example of a watch that’s not particularly spectacular, groundbreaking or innovative. But more often than not, a great watch doesn’t need to be a game-changer. The 2024 Speedmaster FOiS comes in continuity to a concept introduced in 2012, a vintage-inspired watch celebrating the first space flight of an Omega watch. It retains what should be retained, it upgrades what could be upgraded and somehow brings what the fan base wanted to see in this watch. Following our introducing article, it’s time now for us to bring our…

It was 1979, and I had accompanied my parents to a dinner party. I was six years old, and my parents’ friends had no children. My parents married later in life and came from a generation where children were meant to be seen and not heard. Unfortunately, I am one of those who likes to be seen and heard. However, I was instructed to be on my best behavior, so they set me in front of the television. Noticing that I was bored, our host handed me his wristwatch and said, “Check this out.” He pressed a button on the…

Over the past few years, stone dials have seemingly popped up everywhere. More modern brands are making them. At the same time, vintage examples have become more collectible and jumped in price considerably. But stone dials are still a relatively undiscovered corner of watch collecting. They’re not well understood on the vintage or modern side. So I wanted to cover them on Hodinkee. Typically, we’d do this by talking to a few experts and synthesizing those conversations into an in-depth article. But I decided to try something different this time around, hitting record on three conversations to learn about modern…

In 2021, Farer introduced its Field Collection. It consisted of three watches, all with the same compact stainless steel case but rather diverse yet colorful dial designs. The common denominator was that they were all inspired by field watches. Now the British-based brand has reintroduced its Field Collection. The Pembroke II, Lomond II, and Exmoor II all have a slimmer bezel and updated dial designs. Don’t worry, though — they’re just as colorful as before, as befits the Farer brand.…

I think it’s fair to say that British brand Elliot Brown has absolutely nailed the tool watch. When it comes to proper tool watches, I’ll quote generational wordsmith will.i.am by saying “I like them big, I like them chunky.” I strongly favor trim, wearable watches, but if a brand is…
