The Ebel 1911 Globe you see here is one of the most divisive watches we’ve had in the office lately. Only Robert-Jan and I like this glorious piece of late-1980s design brilliance, so it won’t surprise you that I volunteered to review the watch. Besides the fact that I like the flashy presence, it awakens vivid childhood memories from the ’90s with a little sprinkle of Miami-themed bliss. As you will understand, this watch is not just a stylish piece of horology to me but also a storyteller that had me wandering off to my younger days. As a watch…

The Le Régulateur Gravé Noir is a vintage-inspired take on Louis Erard’s signature regulator wristwatch. The “sector” dial has a grained black finish with engraved markings that are gold-plated, bringing to mind vintage “gilt” dials.Part of the brand’s Noirmont Métiers d’Art collection, the new Le Régulateur shares the same case design and specifications with the recent “Grand Feu” Enamel Regulator.Initial thoughtsWhile Louis Erard is best known for its collaboration with independent watchmakers, such as Konstantin Chaykin and Kudoke, it offers a wider range of accessibly-priced regulator-style watches. And the Le Régulateur Gravé Noir is no different. It’s a fresh take on…

First presented in 2017, the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 came as a surprise, initiating an unprecedented design for the collection. This highly complex Breguet watch, first available in a platinum case with a blue dial, actually teased the complete revamp of the collection that occurred a year later. Three years later for the 220th anniversary of the tourbillon, the collection was expanded to include a pink gold model with a slate/brown dial. This year, this timepiece combining a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar and an equation of time resurfaces in a striking version mixing a platinum case and a black…

Seven years ago, Breguet introduced the flagship model of its Marine collection, the Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887. Two versions debuted in 2017 — one in 18K rose gold with a silver dial and the other in platinum with a blue dial. In 2020, another rose gold version joined the Marine collection, this time, with a brown dial. My colleague Jorg wrote an in-depth review of that watch. Breguet Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 in platinum Today, Breguet introduces another variant of the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887. It’s the second version of the watch with a platinum case, but this…

The new Ulysse Nardin Diver Net Vendée Globe celebrates one of the most taxing sailing races. It’s also the most sustainable watch yet from the Swiss brand. Let’s take a closer look at this sporty and colorful diver. Ulysse Nardin is no stranger to supporting lengthy, challenging races. The Gumball 3000 comes to mind in the automotive world, but the company is also involved with sailing. The Diver Net Vendée Globe is made to support a race with the same name and marks the second time the company has supported the event. The demanding Vendée Globe happens every four years…

A couple of years ago, I reviewed the Mark Carson Kailua watch. The Kailua is an elegantly designed, square-themed watch from independent Hawai’i-based watch designer and collector/community enthusiast Mark Carson. He released a few watches before the Kailua, but I think he really hit his stride with this model because it combines both originality and familiarity in a way that speaks to fellow enthusiasts. The Kailua is named after a beautiful part of the city of Honolulu where he lives, and the square theme of the watch is a shape profile that has been interesting to Carson for a while.…

There’s no right answer. Sure, a chronograph should be sporty, and the EVO does that. If I were to consider buying a watch that costs as much as a house (in some of America, at least), I’d be looking for one that can do it all, at least in some regard.  Is it a watch that I can wear in various circumstances, from a summer vacation on a beach to a meetup with watch friends to a fancy dinner with…

IWC Schaffhausen is the quintessential example of a watchmaker that set out to become famous for one thing but ended up being famous for something else. Founded in 1868 by American expat Florentine Ariosto Jones, the International Watch Company devoted itself chiefly to luxuriously decorated pocket watches in its early…
