The SeaQ series, part of Glashütte Original’s Spezialist collection, made its debut in 2019, representing the German brand’s interpretation of the classic diver’s watch and drawing inspiration from the Glashütte Spezimatic Type RP TS 200, originally introduced at the end of the 1960s by the East German GUB (Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe). While the vintage Spezimatic models were affordable, robust and functional, the modern Spezialist line, which includes the SeaQ time-and-date models closely resembling the original Spezimatic RP TS 200, as well as the SeaQ Panorama Date and SeaQ Chronograph, is positioned in the luxury segment with a focus on high-end presentation.…

We’re back in the swing of things after an end-of-summer break from Hodinkee Radio. This week, James, and Malaika join the show. We discuss some of our favorite recent releases from Zenith, Tudor, Hamilton, Chanel, and more. Then, we get into Malaika’s recent in-depth article on Tiffany & Co.’s “untapped watchmaking potential.” We explore the American retailer’s long relationship with watches and watchmaking, and discuss the potential for revamping its watches in the wake of its 2021 acquisition by LVMH. Then, we have a Collecting Advice from a world-traveling free diver looking for a watch. Thanks as always for listening…

When A. Lange & Söhne makes a contribution to watchmaking, whether in the areas of technology, design, materials, or any combination of these or other elements, it tends to go above and beyond the call — to challenge itself to reach a little higher, to put its own distinctly Saxon spin on things. This philosophy is evident particularly in the brand’s approach to complications: not just a moon-phase, but a moon-phase that’s accurate for more than a century. Not just a tourbillon, but the first tourbillon with a stop-seconds mechanism. Not just a split-seconds chronograph, but the first “triple split”…

When shopping for a new watch, the movement is often a point of consideration for many enthusiasts. But what does it do? Simply put, the movement, often referred to as a “caliber,” is the engine powering the watch and regulating the rotation of its hands. While some may feature additional features called complications, their primary duty is accurate time-telling. Today, we’ll walk through the basic differences between manual, automatic, and quartz movements.

Norqain has expanded its Independence collection with the addition of two new flyback chronograph models that borrow some styling cues from the popular Wild One time-only models. The new Independence Chronographs feature the “8K Manufacture Caliber (NK24/1),” which is a movement developed for Norqain by Sellita’s Manufacture AMT SA, not by the brand’s usual movement partner, Kenissi. The “8K” is a reference to the world’s highest peaks, known as the “Eight-Thousanders,” of which there are 14 total. This mountainous theme is carried through in the design, as well. The new watches are offered in steel, as a regular production model,…

Buffy Acacia Just how good do you need to be at making cocktails before the Emperor of Japan awards you a Medal of Honor? At least as good as Hisashi Kishi, the owner of Star Bar in Tokyo, and winner of the International Bar Association World Championships. It’s with him that Seiko has collaborated in this recent batch of Seiko Presage Cocktail Time watches, a catalogue which now more than ever is starting to resemble the decadent cocktail watches of the early 20th century. The Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SRE015 is the latest in line, bringing old-school faceting to a…

One of the reasons I find Philipp Plein interesting as a brand is because the company produces two incredibly different types of watches that exist on polar opposite sides of its catalog. While Philipp Plein’s top-of-the-line offering is a Swiss-made flying tourbillon with a price tag equal to that of a luxury automobile, the brand’s appropriately named “Fashion Watch” collection consists of timepieces that all cost less than a thousand dollars. Among the latter side of its catalog is the…

A fairly niche brand from Japan, Minase has recently gained popularity with its nicely designed watches and complex cases, built around concepts of multiple windows. Minase doesn’t focus on watchmaking but mostly on external parts. Yet, there is a watch that feels far more simple and elegant, the M-3, with…
