Elka Watches is a relatively young brand built on a historical, defunct Dutch name, which was relaunched a couple of years ago by Hakim El Kadiri. Despite having no connection with the defunct Amsterdam brand, he wanted to pay tribute to the old Dutch brand and bring back the flair of the 1960s with modernised specifications. But today, a somewhat different idea has surfaced. Expanding his horizons, Hakim launches Loch Lat, a meticulously crafted single malt whisky and a special edition of his minimalist watch with an amber-toned dial to match. This new venture, born out of a passion for…
Welcome to the second installment of our new series, Fratello Watch List! Thomas kicked off this short series of articles exposing some of our writers’ watch hit lists. We all have a (not-so-)little list of references we plan on owning or maybe just dream of acquiring someday, don’t we? Today, it’s my turn to expose some of my (neo-)vintage wishes, guilty pleasures, and other random references on my Chrono24 Notepad. Similar to Thomas, I’m not actively hunting for a new watch at the moment. But that’s not because, like him, I’m starting a watch brand. I guess it has to…
This latest “Blue” version of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono could be one of the last iterations of this timepiece model before Tudor updates this collection. I have long anticipated Tudor to develop a new chronograph model to offer a lower-priced alternative to the mega-popular Rolex Daytona (which is thinner and smaller). The Black Bay Chrono was never intended to be an analog to the Daytona, as its focus was offering a chronograph version of the Black Bay retro diver’s-style watch. It may have retro looks but also has modern sizing proportions. Tudor has had comparatively few chronograph models during…
New watch micro-brands are created almost every day, with dozens of them surfacing and many disappearing as fast as they came. This is why we tend to be slightly selective about what we cover here on MONOCHROME. From time to time, however, one of these new ventures catches our attention, such as Tusenö, a relatively young brand created in 2015 and coming from Sweden. One of its latest creations is a rather handsome watch with strong Nordic nautical inspiration. And this accessible automatic all-rounder is named the Windseeker. The story of Tusenö started in 2015 in the city of Gothenburg,…
Switzerland-based luxury conglomerate Richemont Group has just issued its trading update for the six months ended 30 September 2024. The Group delivered an overall stable performance with flat sales at constant exchange rates and -1% at actual rates, at EUR 10.1 billion. At EUR 2.2 billion, profit is down 12% at constant rates and down 17% at actual rates. This resilience of sales in a challenging environment for the luxury industry was secured by the performance of Jewelry Maisons (Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels in particular), up 2% at actual rates. On the other hand, sales of specialist watchmakers were…

I have had the idea for this article at least as long as I’ve known Nico Henke, a German-based collector who we can rightly call an expert on all things related to Enicar chronographs. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and, with Nico’s help, explore the phenomenal line of Enicar Sherpa Graph watches. Maybe you know Nico too, but you just don’t know it’s him. He is known around Instagram as @_jimjupiter, and he is also an author of…

Well, the New York edition of the Windup Watch Fair for 2024 is done and dusted, and as per usual, I have opinions. This year’s fair featured more than 130 brands, sprawling across a space five times the size of last year’s, and still, the venue seemed to be bursting…
Last week, the historic Swiss watch brand Universal Genève took a page from the marketing textbook in the Age of Social Media, removing all of its previous Instagram posts signifying to the world that a rebrand is underway. As soft-launched in the brand’s first post, Universal Genève’s prodigal return is…

It takes a certain courage and determination to start a watch brand. One has to articulate his or her vision into three-dimensional, complex, and mechanical objects. I sometimes struggle to transfer thoughts and ideas about watches to paper, let alone deal with prototypes, source components, and market the final product.…
Today, a few rectangular watches seem to get all the attention. It’s fair enough, especially when the Cartier Tank and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso are legitimate icons. But before the circular shape gained a chokehold on the modern wristwatch thanks to soldiers during the World Wars, rectangles were popular ’round the world.…
