Nowadays, a high-quality dive watch is as much a style accessory as it is a reminder of the things its wearer values in life. Whether you’re a designer envisioning the sleek lines of a racing yacht’s hull or a desk jockey working through your inbox while dreaming about your next weekend by the shore, the 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch is as evocative as it is stylish.Seiko’s designers brought their A-game to every element of the new 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch, with particular attention paid to the case, which is water resistant to 300 meters (a significant boost in performance over…

When it comes down to my personal watch tastes, I would not self-identify as a quiet luxury enthusiast. Nor would I claim to be a minimalist, even if we’re talking about the luxury variety. More often, my preferences lean towards the quirky and colorful, and I have been known to be a lover of things many might consider “junky,” “kitsch,” or even “tacky” at times. No matter how long I’m in  “The Biz,” I don’t think I will ever be able to shake my enthusiasm for thrift-store gems or my habit of scouring eBay for hidden deals at strange hours of the…

Baltic, the French brand founded in 2017, continues to expand operations with multiple new collections – such as the funky MR Roulette, the race-oriented Tricompax Tour Auto, or the rugged Hermétique – but also physical points of sales in Paris, London and New York. A strong departure from the online-only inaugural concept, which shows the brand’s ambitions for the future, these showrooms will soon have a special treat for Baltic’s fans. Released in limited series, here are the new Prismic Stone Dials, three different and vibrant models, each with a natural stone and available from the respective cities they represent.  Celebrating…

At the beginning of the year, Baltic introduced its very surprising and different Prismic collection. While the brand had always had heavily vintage-inspired designs, it took a more contemporary approach with the new Prismic. The watches had clean, angular lines, a case construction containing stainless steel and titanium, and very boldly textured dials. They were just as well designed as Baltic’s other watches, but they were certainly a breath of fresh air for the Parisian brand’s portfolio. Now Etienne Malec, founder of Baltic, introduces new Prismic limited editions. Each of the three watches has a colorful stone dial inspired by…

My journey with Habring² started back in 2009 when my girlfriend (now wife) and I decided to spend a cozy weekend in Vienna. At the time, I was living and working in Prague, thus it was an easy drive to Vienna. On a chilly November morning, after a delightful breakfast, we wandered through the city. That’s when I noticed these enormous banners showcasing various watch brands for an event called Vienna Time. Among them was a banner for Habring². I had been a fan of the brand but had never seen any of their watches in person. So, I jumped…

All carved from natural stones, the dials come in Lapis Lazuli for the Paris showroom, Red Agate for the London showroom, and Green Jade for the New York showroom. They are striking in person. While the standard Prismic editions utilize a mixture of shapes for the applied indices, the stone dial versions dial it back with a Calatrava-esque set of polished, applied hour markers, as well as sharply-faceted dauphine hands. The Baltic logo and seconds markers are printed in white. Up close, the lacquered finish between the thin cut of stone and the markers and text gives the appearance that…

It’s interesting to think about how standardized the world has become. I’m not talking about the fact that there are 41,800 McDonald’s locations globally, or even about how every watch brand seems to follow the same trend, year after year. I’m talking about literal standards, using similar units of measurement in order to make cooperation easier. Standardized shipping containers make transocean shipping extremely efficient. Standards put in place by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) reduce the likelihood of…

More so than possibly any other mainstream complication, the moonphase carries a unique position in watch enthusiast culture. Although it’s undeniably evocative and emotional, the moonphase complication itself is arguably divorced from the hyperfocus on precision that dominates most horological thinking; after all, when is the last time you needed…
