The IFL Watches Tissot PRX “Moji” is the artisan company’s latest limited-edition project. It brings a decidedly colorful and whimsical look to a very popular platform. Modified watches that show a level of craftsmanship are hot right now, so let’s take a look at this new entry to the fold.
One look at the IFL Watches website reveals an interesting phenomenon. Most of the small company’s watches are sold out! As someone who generally keeps his watches “stock,” I was admittedly surprised by the popularity of modified pieces. Then again, when I look at IFL’s past creations, I can see why collectors love them. They’re colorful and somehow not tacky. It also helps that IFLW uses popular but affordable starting points for these editions. Today’s Moji is no exception because it uses the Tissot PRX as its foundation.
The IFL Watches Tissot PRX “Moji”
To be clear, the Moji is not a sanctioned project by Tissot, but that shouldn’t worry potential buyers. The watches use the light green version of the 40mm PRX with an ETA quartz movement. While IFLW has used the PRX for a previous project, the dial modifications were fairly light compared to today’s example. IFLW’s press information explains that the Moji is the product of a collaboration between the company’s artists and a watch collector.
Apparently, the collector wanted to blend some popular emoji symbols on a dial. As a result, we see a couple of naughty symbols such as the eggplant and peach alongside the bomb and face with crossed-out eyes. Even the ghost makes an appearance. What does it all mean? That’s a great question, but IFLW suggests that all of the emojis give a nod to today’s digital banter. However one interprets this, I think it looks fun, and the colors complement the dial and case design well. In fact, the colors aren’t that far off from a duo of relatively wild Rolex models that we featured in a recent edition of Sunday Morning Showdown.
Creating the dials
The Moji features a hand-painted dial on which artists use UV-resistant enamel paints. Every layer requires the artist to stop and allow the enamel to set before beginning again. According to IFL Watches, the final product can take up to ten hours to complete. The watches are all meant to look similar, but due to their handmade nature, each will sport minor differences.
Limited production
The IFL Watches Tissot PRX “Moji” is a limited edition and will come with a certification stating its production number. IFLW isn’t commenting on the number it will build, but previous releases tell us that it will be made for a period and then discontinued. The price of €1,090 is approachable considering the handmade modifications. Granted, we understand that potential buyers must enjoy the look and the idea of an enhanced watch. I do like the Moji and especially the color combinations that spice up the otherwise very plain PRX dial. Recalling my Rolex comment above, I also think that fans will react well to the slight likeness to these far more expensive models. As the saying goes, timing is everything, and perhaps IFLW has chosen the perfect juncture for its newest creation.
